After a restless night and a lot of thought, Elizabeth decided that Friday would be the day. She and Todd had some errands to run in town. It was the perfect opportunity to tell him about Justin.
I don't know how Jessica used to manage to juggle more than one boy at a time, Elizabeth was thinking as she waited for Todd in front of Sweet Valley High.
She knew now that quitting the bowling team wouldn't solve her problems. She smiled wryly to herself. Not that she had been very successful in her attempt to quit, and she would still have had to tell Todd why. Then he would have been upset because she hadn't confided in him. Elizabeth shook her head. He had to know what was going on. Then she would tell Justin that Todd knew everything, and things would go back to normal.
"Are you having an interesting conversation with yourself?" asked Todd, interrupting her thoughts.
Elizabeth blushed. "How long have you been standing there?"
He put an arm around her shoulder. "Long enough to know I'd better get you out of here and to the Dairi Burger for a restoring milkshake."
"Let's not go to the Dairi Burger," Elizabeth suggested as they walked to Todd's BMW. "Let's just go into town and do our errands. I have something I want to talk to you about."
Todd pulled open the car door with a flourish. "I'm surprised," he teased. "You seemed to be having a great time talking to yourself!"
It was Todd who actually did most of the talking on the drive to downtown Sweet Valley. "Did I tell you about the girl I saw in the mall last night?" he asked as soon as they were on the road.
"What girl?" she asked, only half paying attention. Most of her mind was occupied with figuring out how to bring up the subject of Justin.
"It was the funniest thing," Todd said. "I was just coming out of the shoe store and there she was. I actually started to call out 'Jessica!' before I realized it wasn't her."
"Who wasn't her?"
Todd gave her a nudge. "Pay attention," he teased. "The girl in the mall."
"Two Jessicas?" Elizabeth laughed, still not too sure what Todd was talking about. "I don't think the world is ready for that!"
She looked out the side window, returning to her thoughts. It wasn't Justin Silver who was bothering her as much as it was Elizabeth Wakefield. Justin was being a little more pushy than he should be, considering her relationship with Todd, but he wasn't really annoying or obnoxious. What was worrying her was her own reaction. She was enjoying his attention. She was beginning to look forward to practice because of the way Justin looked at her, and smiled at her, and brushed against her when he was showing her a step or handing her her ball.
"It wasn't that she really looked like Jessica," Todd explained, a thoughtful expression on his face. "But there was something about her . . . something about the way she was dressed, or the way she behaved .
